Have you seen my Personal Insights on Part Time Jobs? Today, I will be sharing more about Internship Singapore!

Internship is a paid learning – on the job experience in an external film that hires students from tertiary institutes. Internship are also known as industrial placements allows students to get part-time employment and experience in the industry relating to their field of study and most internships last between 3 months to 6 months. An internship experience are valuable to students as a means of allowing them to have a first-hand experience of working life. It will be useful for students as to gain experience in a particular industry and further determine what they want to pursue as a career.

The emphasis of an internship is to learn on the job and develop training for students and how their studies are applied in the “real world”. Internship enhance the relevance of being on-the-job instead of just reading thick textbooks in class and these work experience can be highly attractive to potential employers.

During my times in Republic Polytechnic, students were not required to go through an internship as part of my course structure. RP focuses on problem-based learning and it was a unique learning experience that puts students through problems faced by industry players and learning was constant. However, I thought placing myself into the workforce will better allow me to find out what it was like to be working and experiencing full-time job, personally. Therefore I took this myself by sourcing out for my very own internship! Yes, I did an internship with a travel agency for 5 months. Internships in Singapore isn’t too hard to find, as many organisations seek interns as and when required. I should say, the benefits being an intern is that that you get to choose where you want to work at, moreover you may get a chance to expand your network and join the company full-time if performances exceeds expectation! Plus, interns get paid too!

 

Other than Singapore Internship, you may also find institutes that offers overseas internship opportunities. Taking that into another level of learning plus fun, as you get to experience the life of the locals. Everyone will be in the workforce eventually, and having an internship experience with any organisation will bring forth a better standing in the future. I believe in every learning, it all starts with the willingness to take the first step out trying and believing in our dreams.

Personal Insights: Part Time Jobs

Looking back on the years being a student, there were often complains about having too little pocket money. Like everyone else, our spending is being determined by the amount of allowances given to us by our parents. Coming from an average family, my allowances ranged from $5 – $10 per day during secondary school to $100 per week during my university. I could say that the amount was self-sufficient for daily food and transportation expenses, taking into consideration that I have most my meals at home and being chauffeured around by my parents.

However, during every school vacation I will get myself a part-time job! I flip through newspapers and going online to search for a temporary job that suits me. Part time jobs in Singapore are aplenty but searching for one that is short-term with flexible working hours, good benefits and pay wasn’t too easy. Therefore, zooming down to part time jobs for students, I am often left with retail or events job that requires temporary workers during specific time.

Why?

As I wanted more money – Being young, we tend to slide into the beautiful world full of material temptations from getting the latest gadgets to our dream vacation or even having enough for more cafes-hopping! I have got to admit youngsters yearn to be in trend and doing the “cool” stuffs. I would never want to show my friends my Nokia phone, whereas everyone else holds an iPhone, right?

Other than my material gains, I gained many work experiences from my part time jobs. They were the best exposure any student should go through. Personally, I have tried working in the retail, F&B, events and service industry – from withstanding the long working hours of standing, facing difficult customer situation during operations, learning new product knowledge, service attitude and lastly understanding the true value of earning money by myself. Learning values like these kept me grounded on the things that I do. There are no short-cuts in life and everything we yearn to achieve in life requires hard work and sacrifices.

In addition, my parents were very encouraging on us having a holiday job. They showed it through fetching me to and fro work and did not once question me about where my salary goes to after pay day. That is how I learned to manage my own finances and allocate part of my salary to savings and spending respectively.

I believe these exposures and experiences I have in my part-time jobs molded my personal character. As the youngest child in the family, I am often most protected and selfish as I expect things to go the way I wanted it to be. Having the opportunity to start working part-time allows me to learn independency by leaving the eyes of my protective parents. I was able to handle work issues myself and attend to other’s needs instead of my own. Working in the retail industry, I was “trained” to communicate with people from all walks of life and having the confidence to approach strangers. These skills will never be taught in school.

No student shall go through school without having to try a part time job, it will be the most amazing decision you ever make! Are you ready to search for your part time jobs Singapore?
